Ely Sinfonia Summer Socials and Concerts
Every year Members and Friends of the orchestra are invited to join us for annual summer social and Friends’ concert, which usually takes place in the summer. This year we were delighted to welcome the Bingham Quartet, headed up by our own artistic director Steve Bingham, who played their usual eclectic mix of pieces in all sorts of different styles before we all indulged in a scrummy tea.
Here’s what our friend Sarah Mnatzaganian wrote about it afterwards:
“I do love a piece of cake, but the real draw of the Friends of Ely Sinfonia concert was the chance to hear the Bingham String Quartet in the intimate environment of King’s Ely Recital Hall. My hunger for live chamber music was more than satisfied. Entr’acte by Caroline Shaw fed both ears and brain with its fascinating series of complex harmonies and playful experimental sound effects and textures (for example bowing a lightly stopped string without a specific pitch). Mendelssohn’s string quartet Op.44 No. 1 followed, delivered with characteristic Bingham energy and delicacy. If like me you don’t know this piece well, listen out for the exquisite third movement with lyrical suspended phrases which are still ringing in my mind days later. (The only caveat is that the Emerson’s version on Spotify isn’t a patch on live Bingham). To finish, we were served a wild hoe-down style arrangement of Waltzing Matilda. We then ate much delicious cake served by kind volunteers. What lovelier perk could there be for being a Friend of the Ely Sinfonia? Thank you to Steve and Brenda Bingham, Marina Gilliam and James Halsey and to all the ES committee for a beautiful afternoon.”
