Officer Reports

Dave McLeish – Commitee Workshop organiser

At the beginning of the year Ely Sinfonia ran its regular “Come and Play” workshop that is open to members and non-members of the orchestra alike. The orchestra has been running these events for a number of years and we’ve built a strong following. For many this is their first chance to experience playing in an orchestra and continues to be a great way of reaching out to other musicians in the orchestra’s locality. This year the workshop focused on Cesar Franck’s D Minor Symphony, a piece the orchestra subsequently performed in the Cathedral as part of our concert program for the year. On the day there were 99 of us (98 players and Steve) – 23 violins, 10 violas, 18 cellos, 5 basses, 9 clarinets (of which 3 bass clarinets), 10 flutes, 4 oboes, 5 bassoons, 4 horns, 3 trumpets, 5 trombones, 1 harp and 1 timps.

We now turn our attention to the organization of our next workshop scheduled for January 2018 when we will be tackling the magnificent Holst’s The Planets Suite. It promises to be another fun day.

Charlotte Dean – Friends of Ely Sinfonia Secretary

The Friends of Ely Sinfonia was inaugurated in 2009 on the back of a concert in Ely Cathedral Lady Chapel of Bach cello suites played by Raphael Wallfisch, our Honorary President. Numbers have dropped since then, standing at just 45 for 2016-7.  This, with slight variations each year, seems to have settled as our base rate, although we constantly strive to increase numbers.  Our loyal core of supporters, some going right back to 2009, have witnessed the quality of the orchestra improve significantly over the years, and are happy to contribute to its continuing development and to be associated with its success.

The FES subscription has been raised for the 2017-18 season to £15 p/p, the first increase since 2009, but it is still a modest figure when compared with other comparable organisations. Benefits of membership include:

  • 10% ticket discounts for ES organised concerts, together with a free programme;
  • the advantage of a period of priority booking for ES concerts;
  • a free recital (in February 2017, a string quartet from the orchestra played music by Mozart, Janacek and Piazzolla, and refreshments were served);
  • an invitation to the play-through on the annual ES open workshop day;
  • a biannual newsletter (January and July), and advance notice of events.

Apart from their subscriptions and concert attendance, Friends have contributed valuably in other ways during the 2017-18 season. Some have provided articles or comments for the newsletters (eg Jane Frances, Susan Daish), some have helped by staffing the FES stall and looking after all stall equipment (Janet and Terry South), some have prepared and served drinks at the rehearsal interval on concert days (Mirella Fray and Brian Osborn).  Such Friends are indispensable and their help is very much appreciated by the orchestra.

Finally, mention must be made of Laura Millman. Without her help the newsletter would not appear in its current attractive and interesting format.  It is a time-consuming and painstaking job and she remains cheerful and creative throughout the lengthy to-ing and fro-ing of preparation.  I cannot thank her enough.
