Children’s Art Competition!

As part of our Outreach work, Ely Sinfonia is running an ART COMPETITION for children aged 7 – 11. Our concert on September 28th features Mussorgsky’s Pictures at an Exhibition. This music represents an imaginary tour of an art collection. We would like to invite you to send us your pictures for an exhibition of art inspired by music. Just paint or draw your responses to any chosen piece of music.

You can choose any piece of music but here are some suggestions of music you might listen to, then draw or paint what it makes you think of or how it makes you feel.

  • Mendelssohn: Hebrides Overture (or Fingal’s Cave)
  • Holst: any movement from The Planets Suite
  • Stravinsky: The Rite of Spring
  • Britten: one of the four Sea Interludes
  • Copland: Hoe Down
  • Tchaikovsky ballet music – Nutcracker Suite or Sleeping Beauty
  • Debussy: Clair de Lune or La Mer

Have you seen the Walt Disney film Fantasia? Walt Disney created film narratives as well as abstract images to go with the music he chose. This film might help you get ideas about what you could do.

We will display as many pictures as possible in the cathedral and there are prizes for the best works.

PRIZES: for each school year group, there will be prizes of an adult ticket to attend our concert and a CD of Mussorgsky’s Pictures. Each adult ticket comes with 2 children’s tickets. Children are invited to attend for free and  sit on the floor in front of the orchestra at all our concerts when an adult ticket of £15 or £20 is purchased.
